― 11 ―This course will provide students with a survey of ancient and classical Japan, from the dawn of civilization on the Japa-nese archipelago through to the rise of warriors in the twelfth century. Emphasis will be divided among the major politi-cal, social, and economic developments in premodern Japanese history. Students will be introduced to the world of the past through individuals and events, as well as being offered windows to the cultural context that influenced them. This course will be conducted in English.Students will become familiar with the key ideas and major developments in premodern Japanese history. They will also master the essential Japanese and English terminology needed to discuss Japanese history effectively. They will be given a thorough grounding in the historical context of each era aimed at providing them with the tools to investigate further on their own and consider comparative approaches across time and space.
