This course introduces students to how Japanese culture, broadly defined, has been received overseas. What kind of impact has Japanese culture - including literature, fashion, and music - had on other countries? How have people overseas understood Japanese culture and made their own contributions to its development? What kind of contributions have Japa-nese made to other countries? Through examining and discussing these topics, students will be able to acquire new per-spectives on Japanese culture by approaching it from a world context. The course will be conducted in English, and will consist of both lectures and in-class discussion.Students will become familiar with Japanese culture in its various aspects not only within Japan itself but around the world. By becoming aware of how Japanese culture has influenced, and been influenced, through interaction with commu-nities around the world, students can broaden their horizons and understand Japanese culture from a global perspective.
