This course will provide students with a survey of modern and contemporary Japan, from the war years starting in the late 1930s to the birth of postwar Japan as a global economic leader in the 1970s, the bubble economy, and the ongoing transformation of modern society. Emphasis will be divided among the major political, social, and economic developments in modern Japanese history. Students will be introduced to the world of the past through individuals and events, as well as being offered windows to the cultural context that influenced them. This course will be conducted in English.Students will become familiar with the key ideas and major developments in modern Japanese history. They will also mas-ter the essential Japanese and English terminology needed to discuss Japanese history effectively. They will be given a thorough grounding in the historical context of each era aimed at providing them with the tools to investigate further on their own and consider comparative approaches across time and space.
